Who knew a sandwich would cause such a kerfuffle … oh wait, this is Twitter we’re talking about. In this episode of “What Were They Thinking?” Melissa examines the social media explosion over Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen’s latest menu offering, a chicken sandwich. While fans of the chicken restaurant tweeted excitedly about the new sandwich, Popeyes’ tweet about the sandwich kicked off the “Chicken Wars” as Chik-fil-A, Wendy’s and other restaurants jumped online to tout that their sandwiches were better.
With lines out the door, the new sandwich was clearly popular at Popeyes … but a little over two weeks after the sandwich was introduced, Popeyes announced it had run out of chicken for the sandwich, and that fans should download the chain restaurant’s app and enable push notifications to know when it would be back in stock. Needless to say, people were not pleased.
